The Quiet Joy
Katherine Geoghan '27

The sunlight danced on the lake. The old man stood at the water’s edge, the day warm and
inviting—a perfect backdrop for solitude. He cast his fishing line with a steady hand, watching as the lure created gentle ripples. Curious fish swam closer, intrigued by the splashes.

A sudden tug pulled at his line, and a smile formed on his face. He chuckled, a sound that
echoed softly across the lake. Though alone, happiness embraced him warmly. The peaceful
lake mirrored his fulfillment, and the shimmering sky above reflected in the water.

The rod tugged again.
“You know, little fish, I have so little,” the old man said softly.
“But my heart is overflowing,” he continued with a smile.

His reflection appeared in the shimmering water as the fish fought back, a playful dance
beneath the surface. The sun shone on his face, bringing a gentle warmth. Then, suddenly, the
rod slipped from his grip and sank silently into the deep, forgotten waters.

He leaned back, eyes closed, still smiling. Alone, he sat—but in that stillness, he felt complete.
Time stopped around him. The world quieted to the sound of the gentle ripples on the lake. In
that moment, he embraced the quiet, knowing that life held its beauty in simplicity.

He remained, perfectly at peace, a figure of joy amidst the calm lake scene.
